Quotes Kenny : [sobbing] They filmed me. Hector : Like sex? User reviews Review. Top review. The best program I have seen in years. I have only seen the first two installments of this series and but was impressed enough to leave a review. Charlie Brooker has popped out of the internet at times when I least expect it revealing the more unsettling aspects of our culture through his program Screenwipe and others.
That was my first exposure to Doug Stanhope, a comedian who among others brings us closer together via demonstrations of how media and technology are changing our society and rarely for the better. Black Mirror arrives in the form of anthologized science fiction in the vein of the Twilight zone. It is a series that examines our society's relationship with the media and how it allows us to both shape our own identity and imprison us in a space where empathy and truth are weaknesses and something to hide in order to get ahead.
I have always been interested in futurists and Brooker seems to fill the requirements for one. There is nothing in the first two installments that do not reflect current trends in our collective behavior but instead extrapolates where current trends in communications technology; avatars, social media and reality television might lead us if we do not seek to preserve what is beautiful and pure about our collective consciousness and humanity.
Having seen reviews here that feel there is no commentary embedded within these stories I couldn't disagree more. As the title suggests, Brooker's Black Mirror shows us a dark reflection of our selves and allows us to evaluate these scenarios through our own emotional filters.
There are no blatant soap box messages but I interpreted the narratives as cautionary tales and would hope that no one, when confronted with them, would hope for these near futures. The only thing holding them back from becoming reality is our own resistance to complacency and purely spectator culture. Beyond these philosophical aspects, the program is incredibly well produced and executed in my opinion.
The characters and sets create convincing realities and I was never once drawn out of the story due to poor acting, scripting or characterizations. I could not recommend this series more and hope that it will continue on. Congratulations to Brooker and company for their work and their apparent concern for all of us. Shinitaika Jan 21, FAQ 2. The next week, Yorkie visits another nightclub, the Quagmire, looking for Kelly.
Wes advises her to 'try a different time'. Yorkie eventually finds Kelly in , but Kelly rebuffs Yorkie's advances. After Yorkie leaves, Kelly follows and confesses that she is dying; Kelly had avoided Yorkie because she feared developing feelings for her. The two have sex again, and Yorkie reluctantly tells Kelly her real-life location so that they can meet. San Junipero is revealed to be a simulated reality where the deceased can live and the elderly can visit, all inhabiting their younger selves' bodies.
She learns from Yorkie's nurse, Greg Raymond McAnally , that Yorkie was paralysed at age 21 after crashing her car when her parents reacted poorly to her coming out. Yorkie wishes to be euthanised so that she can live in San Junipero permanently, but her family objects; she intends to marry Greg so that he can consent for her. Kelly visits San Junipero and offers to marry Yorkie instead.
Once Yorkie enthusiastically accepts, Kelly authorises Yorkie's euthanasia. During Kelly's next visit to San Junipero, Yorkie asks her to stay full-time. Though Kelly does not believe in an afterlife, she plans to die without being uploaded to the simulation. Kelly's husband Richard chose to die in the same way because of the death of their daughter Alison at age 39 before San Junipero was available. Yorkie and Kelly argue, and Kelly leaves in her car, which she crashes on purpose.
Yorkie catches up to her just as Kelly disappears, her visiting time over for the week. Time passes, and Kelly decides that she is ready to enter San Junipero permanently. She is euthanised and buried alongside her husband and daughter, and she happily reunites with Yorkie inside San Junipero. Brooker initially envisioned an episode in which technology is used to investigate whether an afterlife exists, [6] thinking of the genres of horror and supernatural fiction.
This idea was scrapped with the broadcast of Westworld , in which humans visit a theme park inhabited by androids. Brooker has said that he wrote the script for the episode in four days. The episode was originally to have an unhappy ending. After listening to the song and lyrics several times, he came to the final shot, which shows a bank of computer servers with flashing lights, giving literal weight to the song's title.
Following the episode's release, Brooker was asked about a Reddit post speculating that Kelly is simulated for Yorkie's benefit, rather than really there; he replied 'Wrong! They are together', [16] and commented that '[t]hey have the happiest ending imaginable. The nightclub settings featured arcade games, which Brooker took an interest in choosing as he was a teenager during the s and has worked as a video game journalist. Brooker put together a playlist of music from on Spotify.
Every song was successfully cleared except one by Prince. Brooker first heard it while running, and believed it would be perfect for the final scene, admitting in an interview he would have been 'absolutely distraught' if they had been unable to use it.
The series is created and written by Charlie Brooker, and executive produced by Brooker and Annabel Jones. Insecure office worker Lacie Bryce Dallas Howard lives in a happy, smiley, status-obsessed nightmare world. When withdrawn year-old Kenny Alex Lawther stumbles headlong into an online trap, he is quickly forced into an uneasy alliance with shifty Hector Jerome Flynn — both of them at the mercy of persons unknown.
California, San Junipero is a fun-loving beach town synonymous with sun, surf, and sex.
