This was a great follow up to Frost Kate has a wonderful elegant writing style that continues to impress me This is the third book of hers that I have read and she doesn t disappoint. I don t want to get into the plot to much for fear of spoilers but this one had action than the first She alrea [ The Frost Chronicles are such an indie gem Stories like these are the reason I love indie books I love the world of The Frost The hardy inhabitants who stubbornly survive in the face of constant hardship And things have only gotten harder for the Frost dwellers, with the Farther occupation of their town.
I fell in love with Lia in Frost and I still loved her in Thorns She is so strong and puts her family above all else, which is something I admire a lot But Lia isn t perfect She is fiercely indep [ Very quick read Not as good as book 1 mainly because there are too many things happening in my eyes Perhaps the books should have been bigger.
After reading this book I picked up book 3 and soon realized by the pacing, that this could never be the last book of the series. So I checked and bingo, book 4 is coming out spring That was when I decided to pick something else to readI don t mind series but no than 3 books This is just to earn money Such small books so although there is much to lik [ With the love of her life gone Lia strives to carry on with her parent s legacy of the Thorns She still has her doubts about the organization but with the growing oppression of the Farthers and her growing bond with Adam it is the best way for her and her family to survive I really liked Lia in this one She seemed to grow as a person and I really liked her relationship with Adam I also really liked how the story is progressing The unraveling of the secrets is interesting and the storyline is rea [ Recently I was reading a comment by a fantasy writer where they said that fantasy readers generally expect their heroes heroines to be smart I hadn t thought about it before but I think she may be right because what annoyed me the most in this book was the girl s stupidity She wasn t brave and bold she was just foolish and rude.
This is a series review Note there are also two novellas, Brewer and Fugitive, that take place between books four and five I am totally buying them, but since I haven t done so yet, they re not included in this review I have finally found an author who measures up to the marvels of Cidney Swanson Surprisingly or perhaps not she, too, is an indie author Other similarities between the two their breathtaking book covers drew me in where the back cover copy left me skeptical Both women focus on ser [ Could not put this book down.
Great book Many twist and turns I was caught up in it with the first chapter I can t wait to read the next one. Second in the series and just as compelling as the first evidenced by the fact I read it in one day.
Originally posted at Melissa s Bookshelf as a mini review, along with mini reviews of the first, third, and fourth books in the series. Perhaps the best part about having an eReader is being able to immediately download the next book in a series Well, assuming it s been published, haha I loved that I didn t have to wait after finishing Frost to begin Thorns For me, Thorns and the third book, Weavers, are my favorites in the series so far Thorns was fast paced and I liked the direction Ellison dec [ Wow, I really, really enjoyed Thorns possibly even a lot than Frost though the first book of a series I like always holds a special place in my heart, because it s what introduced me to the beauty of the series as a whole.
The world building continues to unfold naturally in the second book of the Frost Chronicles I found myself impressed that Ellison manages to significantly complicate the plot and the actors involved in the political situation while never making me feel like any of them were su [ But if he expected me to shatter like fine china, he was mistaken I was carved from the Frost I was a Weaver s daughter I was ice and wood and frozen rain We pick up Lia Weaver s story two months after she discovers the mystery of the Thorns and she sends the Farther boy Gabe into a portal where he will be safe Or so we think Up to now we actually don t know where these portals go and where the people are This felt like an in between book Filling up some details and time before something BIG I [ Thorns, book 2 of The Frost Chronicles, completely exceeded my expectations The plot was captivating the characters, intriguing, and the unexpected twists have me wanting the next book now.
Lia Weaver really stepped into her character in Thorns In the first book, I just couldn t connect to her, but that all changed with this installment Her devotion to her siblings mixed her determined and sometimes, stubborn personality pulled me in. Honestly, trying to get Adam to talk at length about anything w [ I read both Frost and Thorns in the span of a day, and while that's not unusual for me, it's definitely been a while since such a series has left an impression on me!
The world Ellison has crafted is mysterious and beautiful--she hasn't just fallen back on the "Oh, we're in the ruins of [insert major U. While the underlying theme may not be terribly original, its presentation feels very unique and lets the story stand on its own. The characters are all multidimensional and relatable. Lia's far from perfect despite her new paramour's protestations to the contrary Ellison is a very articulate writer, and her prose is mature enough that I almost hesitate to categorize this as YA.
Especially compared to the much more subtle romance in the first novel. There is a far more fascinating plot to be found in the political intrigues working their way up to the Frost and the rapidly-encroaching military rule. In contrast to that, the over-wrought exchanges between Lia and Adam just seem needlessly added in to provide the obligatory love triangle. I like romance as much as the next person, but I definitely would've liked to see more action with the actual plot in this book.
There's just so many questions yet to be answered--I hope the author reveals more of what's actually going on in the next installment. That being said, Thorns wrapped up with an exciting development for both aspects to the story and I'm looking forward to seeing where things go from here. My feelings about this series are largely positive. I would highly recommend it to fans of the genre, as despite the short page count and the fact that it's self-published, it is far more well-written and professionally edited than a lot of similar series I've purchased for much higher prices in recent months.
Suffice it to say, I will enthusiastically purchase the next book when it comes out! Over all the plot and story is an interesting twist on the futuristic distopian society but the story was so slow. I felt like at times that nothing happened for chapters on end and the main characters constant debate on what to do both in the first and second book makes me kind of hate her character.
Read the book if you don't have anything better to do because it isn't horrible and I actually enjoyed a lot of things about this story but there isn't enough good to out weight the bad to make me read it again.
This one has more twists and turns, many more revelations and the occupation by the farthers really begins to anger the frost people. Lia, of course, takes risk after risk but at least she seems to becoming more a part of the community now. If you liked the first book the surprises at the end of the book will knock your socks off. Even though this was above a 4 star, it did not quite make it to Loved this book! The pace, the beauty and the suspense is incredible.
I cannot believe the twists and turns that the plot takes you and the emotion it brings out in you. Book 3 needs to show up like now!
